Tennis Coach/Ace Athlete Helps Launch Firethorne Tennis Program

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Firethorne has been a client of Susan Farb Public Relations for five years and has a wealth of talented residents and staffers in the 1,400-acre master-designed community in Katy/Fulshear. I’ve had the good fortune to meet and work with several people there who have helped create this tight-knit, neighborly community, including a middle school competitive bicyclist, Madeleine McDuff, who trained for and participated in the National Junior Cycling Championships in California (Firethorne sponsored her local cycling team), a mom, Beverly Tucker, who helped raise the funds needed for the Woodcreek Elementary School playground cover to help protect children from damaging rays of the sun (her son has Alopecia Areata), and Fitness Center personal trainer Peggy Skaggs, who transformed herself from a size 16 to a size 4 and who went on to earn her certification as a personal trainer from the prestigious Cooper Institute in Dallas.

The newest addition to this Firethorne tradition is the new tennis coach, an ace on and off the tennis court! Resident athlete/sports coach Chris Dante didn’t even take up the sport until he was 30, after excelling in baseball (in 1988 he made it as far as the Olympic Trials), basketball (City University of New York team captain) and football, as well as boxing and Taekwondo (he has a black belt)!

“But after one too many broken noses, I turned to something less brutal — tennis,” said Dante, who helped launch Firethorne’s premiere tennis program this spring. With the new Women’s Tennis League and beginner tennis clinics now in full swing, Firethorne continues to demonstrate the Katy/Fulshear community’s commitment to fitness and competitive sports, through its hike and bike trails, swimming and running (Katy Triathlon at Firethorne), regulation lacrosse fields and personal training at the on-site exercise facility.

According to Firethorne Marketing Director Janet Burkett, the fact that Chris lives and coaches in Firethorne further illustrates the true spirit of community at Firethorne. “He’s more than a coach, he’s a neighbor and mentor and he is deeply committed to instilling in children the values of honor and virtue in sports competition.”

During the summer, Coach Dante offers two morning clinics for children (9 and 10 a.m.) and one 6 p.m. clinic for adult beginners. He also teaches private lessons. The tennis courts are open to Firethorne residents and their invited guests.

Dante worked as a coach at Iona College (Div. I) in New York and Providence College in Rhode Island. “At Iona College, I worked with Iona College Basketball Coach Jeff Ruland, an All-American out of Iona College who played in the NBA,” he said.

He approached John Brennan, tennis coach of the citywide champion St. Francis Preparatory High School in Queens, NY, to be his tennis coach and mentor. For the next three years, Dante played in tournaments all over New York City, He coached high school tennis in Providence, RI, before moving with his wife, Marina, and their three children to Katy, two years ago. He appreciates living in Katy because of the best schools and it is “a wonderful place to raise children. My wife loved Firethorne because it looked like ‘real Texas.’ I bought her dream house here,” he said.

“Coaching is a labor of love,” said Dante. “I love being outside with the kids — teaching and coaching them.” He also enjoys introducing many of their parents to tennis, as well as coaching baseball and football through his company, Sports Mania.

The four fully lit hard courts, Firethorne’s newest amenities, are located adjacent to the lacrosse fields in the development.

Hats (or caps!) off to the Rotary Club of Katy and Firethorne for hosting the most successful Katy Triathlon in its 17-year history — raising $50,000 for the Katy Rotary Fund. This is a major volunteer effort on the part of the Rotary and they put on a stellar event. All the planning and logistics meetings paid off with a very organized, smoothly-run event for close to 1,000 athletes and 2,000 fans on hand to cheer friends and family members on to complete the rigorous race. Congrats to all and Firethorne looks forward to hosting again in 2010!

Katy Triathlon at Firethorne a Run-Away Success:
Record-Breaking $50,000 Raised

Katy/Fulshear, TX – Nov. 10, 2009. . . The Katy Triathlon at Firethorne was a runaway success with nearly 1,000 athletes running, swimming and cycling to raise the most funds ever — $50,000 — to benefit the Katy Rotary Fund. The Rotary Club of Katy, race sponsor, raises funds to support local charities for their work in providing essential health, recreation and educational services to children in the Katy Independent School District attendance area.

“We netted $50,000 — the most ever in the 17 years of the Katy Triathlon,” said Dr. Jim Jacobs, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Katy. The 2009 event attracted the greatest number of sponsors and in-kind donations ever, which will enable the Katy Rotarians to fund a minimum of 20 $1,000 college scholarships to graduating seniors from the district’s six high schools in 2010, up from 16 scholarships in 2009, as well as support other deserving charitable projects.

Triathletes — women, men, girls and boys — ranged in age from 10 to 72. Winners by category are available on the Katy Triathlon at Firethorne website, http://www.cincoranchtri.com.

According to Rotary Club of Katy President Graig Harrison, the consensus among athletes was that the Firethorne event was the best Katy Triathlon the club has ever coordinated. “We’ve already got people asking us when registration is for next year!” he said.

The USA Triathlon-sanctioned race was held in and around Firethorne, a 1,400-acre Katy/Fulshear residential community. Nearly 1,000 athletes and 2,000 spectators (including many out-of-towners) participated in the Houston City Triathlon Championship venue, the third largest co-ed triathlon in Texas.

Individual athletes as well as relay teams competed in a 1/3-mile swim around the 12-acre Lake Firethorne, as well as a 15-mile bike race and a three-mile run through Firethorne. The cycling route included sections of FM 1463, US Hwy. 90, Pederson Road, and the I-10 Frontage Road. Firethorne is located on FM 1463, near the crossroads of the I-10 West corridor, Westpark Tollway and Grand Parkway.

Cinco Ranch High School FBLA, Rotary Interact Club and Boy Scouts provided volunteer support for the race.

Positive Real Estate News from Houston-Area Residential Home Front: Firethorne Celebrates Third Anniversary with 772 Home Sales to Date

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Katy/Fulshear – June 11, 2009. . . . With 772 home sales in its first three years, including 92 in 2009 (to date), Firethorne celebrated its third anniversary in May with some positive residential real estate news from the Houston-area home front. The 1,400-acre master-designed community is located in Katy/Fulshear, 15 miles west of Houston’s Energy Corridor.

“Firethorne has been holding its own in today’s real estate market thanks to continued growth in the Katy and Fulshear areas and for being part of one of the greatest school districts in the state. There are three major Houston hospitals expanding in this area — two under construction and one on the drawing board — plus BP America and Conoco/Phillips relocating employees here,” said Firethorne General Manager Wayne Meyer.

Thanks to this business activity, Firethorne continues to lay the infrastructure for new home sections and has begun work on the North Firethorne Road extension. In addition, Firethorne builders Perry Homes, David Weekley Homes, Coventry Homes and Partners In Building are building a total of four new homes for the new Model Park I set to open in September 2009. Highland Homes currently has a model in Model Park I.

“The Katy area in general is running counter to what the rest of the city and nation is doing (in home sales),” observed Partners In Building-Firethorne Sales Consultant Scott Wilson, based at Firethorne since June 2007. “While one may think the (sales) numbers should be down, the reality is, we’re picking up a larger portion of the market share compared to other areas of town because of what value Firethorne offers.  This year Partners In Building came out of January with a bang at Firethorne,” he said. He notes an influx of relocation buyers, from out-of-town and from more seasoned Katy area residents looking to escape the traffic congestion of Mason and Fry Roads.  “Interest rates will never be as low as they are now and homebuyers are finding their monthly house payments won’t go up that much,” he explained.

Firethorne sold 204 homes in 2008 and 218 homes in 2007. According to Plantation Homes-Firethorne sales consultant Charlie Russo, his office is on pace to meet or exceed 2008 sales. “Business has been brisk this spring,” said Russo, who has sold 17 homes this year. The homes, priced from the $170,000s to the $270,000s, are attracting more first-time homebuyers thanks to the tax credits available, he said.

“I believe Firethorne is just now coming of age,” said David Weekley Homes-Firethorne Sales Consultant Sandee Horton, awarded David Weekley Homes Sales Consultant of the Year in 2007 and 2008. Horton also is seeing activity from top oil company executives relocating to the area.  “I have clients who have referred me to friends and family, which speaks volumes about Firethorne,” she said, noting one David Weekley Homes homeowner who transferred here from Brazil, referred her two other Brazilian families who bought homes in Firethorne.

Firethorne blends with the best nature has to offer: 150 acres devoted to parks and recreational amenities, a 12-acre lake with surrounding greenbelt, hike/bike trails, parks and playgrounds, discovery-rich wildlife observation area and a natural bird habitat. Firethorne combines the vibrancy of West Houston with the small-town charm of Katy/Fulshear. Served by the award-winning Katy Independent School District, the community is strategically located on FM 1463 near the crossroads of the 1-10 West corridor, the Westpark Tollway and the Grand Parkway. To tour Firethorne, take I-10 West and exit Pin Oak to FM 1463, call 281-395-1440 or visit www.firethorne.info.
