Larry Stephenson Named Featured Artist of Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park “A Day at the Airport” Takes Off as Festival Featured Artwork

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

HOUSTON — Feb. 24, 2009. . . Watercolor artist Larry Stephenson toys around his studio with antique marbles, model planes and cars, wind-up tin men and old-time funny papers.  Thanks to his playful eye and serious talent with the paintbrush, the vintage toy collector and painter has garnered multiple art awards, most recently being named featured artist of the nationally ranked Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park March 27-29. The Kansas-based artist will display his “A Day at the Airport,” the Bayou City Festival Memorial Park’s featured artwork, among his many whimsical pieces, joining more than 300 visual and performing artists from around the U.S. and the world at the fine juried art festival. Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park was ranked #3 festivals in the U.S. as voted by the readers of AmericanStyle Magazine (February 2009.)

Stephenson, who has earned two first-place ribbons in watercolor at Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park, creates life-like scenes with toys as his subjects. Sometimes they are still-life pictures, such as “Austin’s Marbles,” a painting of the childhood marbles of Austin Miller, his friend and Antique Americana authority, on a backdrop of a comic strip. Or, he will juxtapose the toys in unlikely situations.  In “A Day at the Airport,” Stephenson stages robot-like businessmen figures at the airport, while cartoon children are piloting toy spaceships overhead. This light-hearted piece will grace Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park billboards, posters, programs and T-shirts.

From 1978-90, Stephenson was selected to exhibit in many of the most respected watercolor competitions in the country, such as Exhibits of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain National Water-media Exhibition, Midwest Watercolor Society and the Watercolor Societies of Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, among others. His works were included in the National Watercolor Society Traveling Exhibition as well as in Exhibitions at the Butler Institute of Fine Art and Salamagundi Club Open Exhibitions in New York City. Throughout the 1990s Stephenson sustained a successful commercial art career designing a line of poster prints and images used on hundreds of products worldwide.  After selling off the publishing rights to much of his work, he decided to create a new collection of paintings that he had longed to do for many years, focusing on his vintage collectibles. He embarked on this body of work in January 2001 using a combination of gouache, watercolor and egg tempera. “This is where my heart is, “ says Stephenson, a member of the Watercolor Honor Society since 2006.

Of the Festival’s 300 visual artists, two-thirds will be returning to the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park and one-third will be first-time participants. Showcasing works representing 19 media formats, Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park, held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., features clay, drawing/pastel, fiber/textiles, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, watercolor and wood. Houston Arts Alliance produces the performing arts stage with ongoing multi-cultural musical and dance entertainment.  With the park grounds as its stage, CORE Performance Company will conduct a world-premiere program. There also is an array of international food and beer and wine cafes for refreshments, plus the first-ever Epicurean Adventure with wine tastings and chef demonstrations. Firethorne Resident Spearheads PTA Fundraising Campaign: Shade Structure Dedicated at Woodcreek Elementary in Katy/Fulshear

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Katy/Fulshear, TX – February 23, 2009. . . . Thanks to the PTA, industrious Firethorne mom Beverly Tucker and generous donors, Katy/Fulshear-area students at WoodCreek Elementary School now can play outside and still be protected from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. According to the school’s 2008-009 PTA President Diane Pharr, Tucker spearheaded the PTA’s campaign to raise $28,500 to construct a shade structure to cover the school’s playground at 1155 WoodCreek Bend Lane in Katy.

“This shade not only shields our students from the sun, but it adds value to our campus,” said WoodCreek Elementary School Principal Ronnie Mosher. “And the kids absolutely love it!” Mosher lead the morning dedication of the new structure Friday, February 20, with the 1,100-member student body wearing “shades” (sunglasses and caps), PTA President Pharr, several Katy-area project donors and Ms. Tucker on hand.

“Our mission is to enhance our children’s education, their lives and the lives of the school staff,” said Pharr. “With the intensity of the UV rays we get in Texas, we thought it would be a good idea to have this sun shade on our children’s school playground.” Tucker, who has two sons at the school, responded to then-PTA President Beth Toot’s request for a volunteer to write a grant for the American Academy of Dermatology’s Shade Structure Program in March 2007. The Academy grants awards of $8,000 to purchase permanent shade structures to non-profit organizations that serve children and teenagers, ages 18 and under.

The Firethorne full-time mom was the perfect grant writer and advocate for the school’s shade structure project. Not only had Tucker worked as a professional fundraiser, but she has a son who has an autoimmune disease, Alopecia Areata, which causes severe hair loss and therefore makes him susceptible to overexposure to the sun, noted Pharr. Local dermatologist Kelly H. Duncan, M.D., who has extensive dermatologic cancer training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dept. of Dermatology, provided the required Academy member sponsorship for the grant, which was awarded in May 2007. ”I am thrilled that Woodcreek Elementary has an appropriate shade structure for the children while at recess. Early and consistent photo protection early in life can significantly reduce or eliminate a child’s risk for developing skin cancer or malignant melanoma in adulthood,” said Dr. Duncan. The PTA then gave $7,000 toward the project, which left Tucker another $20,500 to raise.

As a new homeowner in the Firethorne master-designed community, Tucker approached Firethorne General Manager Wayne Meyer to support the neighborhood project.  Firethorne agreed to donate $4,000, as did WoodCreek Reserve and Pine Mill Ranch residential communities in Katy/Fulshear. BP-Fabric of America and Montreaux Luxury Homes contributed $1,000 and $500, respectively. The American Academy of Dermatology provides a permanent sign to be displayed near the shade structure promoting the importance of sun safety. The Academy receives support for this program from Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company.

Firethorne is a 1,400-acre master-designed community that combines the vibrancy of West Houston with the small-town charm of Katy/Fulshear. It is strategically located on FM 1463 near the crossroads of the 1-10 West corridor, Westpark Tollway and the Grand Parkway. For info, go to www.firethorne.info, or call 281-395-1440, ext. 115.

Fort Bend Artists Jury in to Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park March 27-29, 2009

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Houston – Feb. 4, 2009 – Wood sculptor James Keller of Richmond and pastel artist Jim Offeman of Missouri City will be among the 300 artists participating in the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park March 27-29.  The fine juried art festival, ranked the #3 festival in the U.S. by the readers of AmericanStyle Magazine (Feb. 2009), received 1,100 artists’ applications from all over the U.S. and Canada — the most in Festival history.

”It’s certainly a beautiful and natural setting to show off the inherent beauty of my wood sculpture,” said Keller, who is making his first appearance at the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park. “Hopefully the patrons will be able to connect the natural beauty of the wooded setting with the beauty of the wood I’ve been able to recycle,” said the 65-year-old civil engineer who has turned to wood sculpting in his retirement.

Offeman, who creates life-life images of birds using pastels, finds Memorial Park a haven for the subjects he draws. His Bayou City Art Festival drawings include an array of birdwatchers’ Gulf Coast favorites, as well as birds found in Memorial Park, such as Downy woodpeckers, hummingbirds, Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers, Mourning Doves and Carolina Wrens. Living in Quail Valley also affords Offeman the opportunity to view and draw a variety of waterborne birds that frequent his back yard pond. Offeman’s “Carolina Wren” was recently on view at The Wildlife Experience Art Museum-Society of Animal Artists’ annual exhibition in Parker, Colorado. The Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin display Offeman’s “Great Egret” for its “Birds in Art” exhibition and purchased it for its permanent collection.
